Review: Classic Shell brings the Start menu to Windows 8 for free
Windows 8 doesn't have a Start button. If you don't think that's something that needs fixing, you're probably in the minority, at least for now. Maybe in time, Windows 8's Modern-style Start Screen will grow on users and it'll turn out Microsoft was right all along. Until that happens, there's a flourishing niche of aftermarket utilities that bring the Start button (and menu) back to Windows 8, from excellent ones like Stardock's Start8, to ones that add value like Pokki. But you don't need to pay to get a Start button: There's one tool that's free, open-source, and very customizable. Meet Classic Shell.

Unlike most Start menu replacements, Classic Shell has been around for a while. Its first version came out in November 2009, long before Windows 8 was even close to public. At the time, it was meant to fix interface annoyances in Windows Vista. That was version 0.9 (the first publicly available version), and today, more than three years later, it's at version 3.6.4. As software projects are wont to do, Classic Shell grew over time, and now consists of three separate parts: Classic Explorer, Classic Start Menu, and Classic IE9.
That tendency of software projects to grow and morph over time is exactly what Classic Shell sets out to fix. It doesn't try to invent anything new: In the project's own words, Classic Shell is "a collection of features that were available in older versions of Windows but were later removed." You're not going to find any groundbreaking UI innovations here, and in my eyes, that's a good thing. These are interface patterns that worked and that Microsoft took away for reasons unknown.

Classic Shell's most newsworthy component is Classic Start Menu, and it's stellar. Hit the Windows key on your keyboard, and up pops a Start menu, just like you remember it from Windows 7 (or Windows Vista, or Windows XP?you can choose your own skin). Start typing to search for programs, hit Enter to launch. Search is blazing fast. You can pin items to the Start menu, and customize every aspect of it. Never use the Printers item? No problem, you can easily make it go away. In other words, Classic Start Menu is just like the Start Menu you know and love, only more customizable.

Marketers Must Harness TV, Video Data in 2013, Mindshare Exec Says
LAS VEGAS -- Turning the plethora of available data about TV and video into insights for brands will be a critical goal for marketers in 2013, says Scott Sorokin, Global Digital Leader, Mindshare Worldwide, during an interview with Beet.TV at the Consumer Electronics Show. "There is so much more rich information to understand about who's seeing it, sharing it and dialoguing about it and using it. It has to be built into the models of value [for TV]," Sorokin tells us, adding that clients are increasingly investing in data technology and cloud-based data. Marketers and agencies need to work on applying this data to more accurately measure the value of the investments made in TV and video marketing, he adds. He also touches on his expectations for TV Everywhere in the year ahead and how video streaming is changing measurement for TV marketers. For more insight, check out this video interview.-This series from CES on GroupM is presented by YuMe.

BlackBerry Z10 Looks Like iPhone 5, Takes on Siri
RIM is set to announce the first devices running its new BlackBerry 10 operating system at an event on January 30. A lucky few, however, have already gotten their hands on what looks to be the new hardware, including German site TelekomPresse.
The site has the BlackBerry Z10, a touchscreen device with a similar look to some of the other popular smartphones out there -- especially the iPhone 5.
Curious to see how the two compared, they put them side-by-side in the video above, running through both the physical design of both devices as well as some of their features.
Notably, the video shows a Siri-like voice control functionality in BlackBerry 10, that we haven?t seen previous…

Group M's Irwin Gottlieb: Web Video Prices Likely to Fall
Don't bet on higher video CPMs in 2013. Even as demand rises for Web video, prices for video ads aren't likely to increase, says Irwin Gottlieb, chairman of global media investment company Group M, in an interview with Beet.TV. We spoke to the media thought leader about video consumption and how the supply-demand equation impacts digital video. "If the demand can't keep up with the growing supply of Web video, what happens to price? It falls," he says in this video interview. "One of the dynamics in play today is no matter how much we increase our demand for Web video, prices aren't going up. The allocation model isn't based on dollars; it's based on impressions."However, some of the premium sites are seeing higher prices for inventory, but by and large, Gottlieb doesn't expect CPMs to rise in digital video; a decrease is more likely. When it comes to devices, he says marketers don't care whether a video is viewed on a TV, computer, table or mobile phone as long as the consumer is exposed to the ad. The bigger distinction lies in whether viewers are "snacking" on programs or not. "If you are on YouTube and consuming short content, you are in a much different mindset than if you are watching a half-hour TV show or one-hour drama. The way you receive messages in a snack mode is different than in a full meal mode," he tells us.
Update from Hollywood: VH1 Doubles Down on GIF's for Big "Divas" Show
This Sunday's big, VH1 Divas show from the Shrine Auditorium in Hollywood has many of the digital elements of other live entertainment shows with vieo streaming from the red carpet and backstage, but in something of new wrinkle, the cable net is producing a large numer of animated GIF's of celebs. We spoke with Dan Sacher, VH1 SVP for digital, about the emerging use of GIF's on the site and on social networks. He explains how the short, silent moving photos are stitched together quickly and shared. VH1 will have a booth on the red carpet to record and produce GIF's with celebrities. Last month, we spoke with Tumblr founder David Karp about the renewed interest in GIF's, a format for simple moving images introduced in 1987. You can find that interview here.

Security and privacy talk mix with glitz and glam at Mega launch
Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom relaunched his empire yesterday with Mega.co.nz, and celebrated with a glitzy launch event at his mansion outside of Auckland.
The event featured a performance by local musician Tiki Taane and his father, as well as a dramatisation of an armed offenders squad raid.
A helicopter with 'FBI' printed on the side at one point circled the crowd as men in black abseiled down the side of the Dotcom mansion. At the event, Dotcom spoke about why Mega was to be trusted with users' files, given that a significant number of Megaupload users had lost theirs.
"Well, of course I understand that some of our customers will have concerns because of what happened before. And there will be some that say, 'Hey, we'll wait a little bit and see what happens here before we sign up and become customers," Dotcom said."But there will be the early adopters. And it will be those who try it out, and I think once they see how great Mega is, the word will spread quickly and more people will sign up. And I'm actually more concerned about how I can manage the current growth because there are so many people signing up."
When asked why Mega was a safer business than Megaupload had been, Dotcom told the audience at Mega's launch that the service has been "scrutinised by lawyers like no other internet start-up in history."
"Every single pixel of this website has been checked for some kinds of issues. Our lawyers have made sure that we are fully compliant with the law," he said. "So I don't think that we need to worry about any kind of takedown anytime soon."
On privacy and encryption, a Computerworld reporter suggested that perhaps, given that Mega was encrypting all files, the Government would make attempts to outlaw encryption. However Dotcom reiterated that privacy was a "basic human right."
"It's in the United Nations' charter of human rights, so I think it will be difficult to outlaw encryption," he said.
Chief technology officer of Mega, Mathias Ortmann, said the encryption code was open source and as such would be subject to peer review.
"We expect the security community to take a long and hard look and comment on possible weaknesses and implementation errors," Ortmann said."To crack the key by simply trying all possible keys is definitely impossible, the universe is not old enough for that."
More than 50% internet traffic is piracy, Dotcom says.
When asked about how Mega would prevent abuse, Dotcom said that Megaupload had not been responsible for the actions of its users.
"They are trying to blame us for an internet phenomenon. This wasn't a Megaupload phenomenon, that there was piracy on Megaupload," he said. "You can ask any ISP that connects users to the internet, 'How much piracy traffic do you have on your network?'. And anyone who will tell you less than 50% is a liar."
Every internet company has to deal with piracy issues, Dotcom said, including reputable organisations like YouTube.
"Why are they coming here, to New Zealand, [to] rip me out of my house when everyone has to deal with the same issues? They can't blame me for the actions of third parties." "If someone speeds in a car they bought you don't go to the car manufacturer and say, 'We're shutting you down.'"
Dotcom also spoke of sister service Megabox, which is yet to be launched. Megabox is to be a service designed for musicians to upload music and get royalties when their music is played on the website.
"Megabox is still under development," he said. "It will take at least another six month before that site goes live. I'm a perfectionist and I'm not going to release a product that I'm not 100% sure of. And Megabox still needs some improvements. But it's going to be an awesome site, it's definitely going to change the music industry."
Dotcom said Megabox would give the power back to the artists and creators of content. Artists using Megabox will keep the "lion's share" - 90% - of revenue from the service for themselves, he said.
Now that Mega is launched, Dotcom said he will be taking a break from the limelight.
"I am getting tired of seeing myself in the news," he said, "so I can't imagine how a lot of New Zealanders feel.""The next time you hear from me will probably be when I am in court, fighting my case if it comes to that. I'm going to take myself a step back."

Cost-Per-Engagement Use Spreads; Marketers Turn to Digital Video as TV Make-Good
About 20% of Tremor Video advertisers are now buying ads on a cost-per-engagement basis, up from virtually none a little more than a year ago, says Lauren Wiener, President, Global Sales and Marketing at the digital video ad technology company during an interview with Beet.TV. In mobile, even more marketers are opting for cost-per-engagement pricing so they only pay when a user "leans forward and engages with the ad," Wiener says. "There is a big concern in mobile that the ad could be running and no one is watching it," she tells us. Cost-per-engagement protects against that concern. The spending growth in digital video has been complementary to TV budgets so far, and some advertisers are even using online video as equivalent to a TV make-good, she tells us, underscoring the cross-device reach of video. Wiener does, however, expect money for digital video to come from shrinking shares in other mediums such as radio, print and display.Looking ahead, more marketers will use interactivity in video ads. "We are working more deeply with creative agencies to add Facebook sharing or Twitter feeds, or outtakes from commercials they have shot. They're looking for something to make the TV creative more shareable or tell a deeper story," Wiener explains. That type of interactivity might even include graphic overlays in car ads that let the users see the car in other colors, for instance.
