When Ken Stephens, a senior vice president of Xerox Cloud Services, tried to hire a product manager from IBM recently, he had quite a shock. "I offered him a 40 percent raise," Stevens said in an interview. "But then IBM came back and gave him 20 percent on top of that."
U.S. gold medalists Ryan Lochte and Conor Dwyer have gone from swimming pool water to campaigning for water rights with the launch of the latest Water For People PSA. The two Olympians have joined Water For People's $2 million challenge, Time Well Spent, raising money for women in the developing world.
In the minute and a half PSA, the two Olympians list everything they can get done in four hours -- the amount of time millions of women and girls around the world spend collecting water. In comparison, the two Olympians won their gold medals in less than a couple of minutes.
The time these women spend getting water could be spent studying in school or working to earn an income.

We know lots of you still use the Twitters for a lot of your social networking needs -- no matter how good Google+ becomes -- and so we bring news of a hot new account that you all should follow. Google Play is widening its horizons, and now has an official Twitter account, @GooglePlay.

The latest ComScore Online Video Rankings, detailing stats and trends in the online video world, have been released. The new report details the state of the industry as of this August, and one of the big stories is that Yahoo has passed Facebook as the second ranked video platform on the Internet, obviously only trailing Google and its YouTube empire. In terms of unique viewers, Yahoo rose 7 million over the past month to 55 million, while Facebook had more than 5 million fewer viewers, dropping to around 47.7 million. Yahoo did lose almost 100 million video views, but they remain well ahead of Facebook in this regard, receiving 529 million views compared to the social networking giant's 261 million. AOL was second in views with 725 million. Facebook's shrinking audience probably had a lot to do with engagement. Facebook averaged just 16 minutes per viewer over the past month, which Yahoo almost quadrupled with its 58 minutes per viewer, 3rd among top players. The 2nd and 4th place finishers in this category (news distributors NDN and AOL, respectively) both saw rises in unique viewers and unique views over the past month. Obviously, Google is still the king across the board, standing miles away and laughing as the other players scratch and claw for second place. The companies various video services (mainly YouTube) accumulated 150 million viewers, 13.7 billion views, and 443 minutes per viewer. However, there is evidence that the gap is shrinking; these numbers are 6.8 million viewers, 5.8 billion views, and around 80 minutes of engagement fewer than last month. Slowly but surely, the rest of the online video world is catching up. Overall, the entire industry had 188 million viewers, 37.6 billion views, and 1,335 minutes (almost one hour) of engagement per viewer. What do you get when pop culture figures of the 80s, 90s, 00s, and 10s all hang out together in one video? The answer has been revealed today on Nerdist, as misleadingly named trio Ben Folds Five has released a music video on the channel for their new single, 'Do It Anyway'. The single is the group's first in 13 years and features the 90s alt rockers in the studio along with the Fraggles (item of 80s nostalgia), Rob Corddry (most famous for his 00s Daily Show gig), Anna Kendrick (who doesn't quite fit into the point I'm making but she's cool so it's ok), and the Nerdist himself, Chris Hardwick (emerging star of the 10s? We certainly hope so.)
Yeah, yeah. We've heard it all before. Android and its mostly open application ecosystem in Google Play is a haven for smut. The Android Phone is for Porn, and all that. Of course, so is any device with a web browser. And as we've seen before, there are some "good" adult apps in Google Play -- as well as a bunch of crap that you'll want to say far away from.
But what about applications that for all intents and purposes are completely acceptable to have on your phone? Apps that nobody would think twice upon seeing. For parents who keep track of what their kids are downloading, some apps might not garner a second glance. Spouses might not suspect a thing.
We all know better, of course. Here are a handful of mostly innocent Android applications that can bring out the naughty side without, ahem, arousing suspicion.

Back at IFA in Berlin a couple weeks ago, we got a look at a yet to be released version of Ice Cream Sandwich running on the Xperia Ion. It looks like the official release wasn't far behind that build, as the international version of the Ion has started to receive its update. Only the LT28i models are seeing it at the moment, but hopefully this is a sign of things to come for those of you with the Ion running on AT&T's network here in the states.
Also, if you're one of those Sony types -- or just appreciate hard working designers -- and somehow missed our great piece by Alex with the Sony design team, it's definitely still worth a look.

Conan O'Brien did a bit on the Kindle Fire HD earlier this week, taking a jab at how Amazon is willing to lose out on device profits in order to undercut the iPad. To that end, he mocked up an ad for the Amazon Wendell, who's some dude who will read you e-books and tell you how well you're doing in Angry Birds for a fiver.
We were generally pretty impressed with the devices in our hands-on experiences with the new Amazon devices, pricetags notwithstanding. Conan raises a point though: how low is too low, and what are you willing to sacrifice for affordability? This isn't the first time Conan has made fun of the Kindle Fire, though; do you think he's got a particular bias against Amazon?

In case you forgot, someone got a bug up their butt a little ways back and decided to make Android Central one of the "1337" backers of the upcoming OYUA Android-based console gaming system. One of the perks of that slightly ridiculous(ly awesome) level of Kickerstarter backing is that we get to choose a username. OUYA just sent out an e-mail saying we'll need to choose around the end of the month, so it's time to get cracking.
But let's have some fun with it. Instead of us choosing some lame name like "JerryTheNeckBeard" or "AlexTheDobie," we're going to let one of you choose our OUYA username, contest-style.
Here's how it'll work:
We don't know exactly when we'll have to put in our request for a username, other than toward the end of the month, so we'll let this one ride until October 1, or when OUYA says it's time to poop or get off the pot -- whichever comes first.
