Facebook at the RNC: Politicians Finally Get Us
The Republican National Convention planners promised this year's convention would be the most digital in history, and with all the major social networks having a presence here in Tampa, it's living up to that promise.
Facebook is among the tech giants roaming the halls -- the company has become intertwined with the convention, having set up Facebook "photo spots" and using the opportunity to launch a co-branded political analytics app with CNN.

Britain's Sky News Introduces Timeshifting via the iPad
LONDON - Sky News, the satellite news channel in Great Britain, has introduced the functionality for viewers to timeshift live programming via its iPad app, says Rob Owers, Producer/Team Leader for the iPad at Sky, in this segment from our recent video journalism summit at the offices of the Financial Times. Viewers can review and share video content up to seven days past the original air date, he says in this video. Timeshifting has been introduced recently to some live news channels via London-based Livestation, as we reported last month. SnappyTV, a small San Francisco start-up has provided its time shifting and sharing technology to Turner Sports. Big live streaming sites including Livestation and Ustream have provided users to time shift and share live programming for some time. Owers says the the time shifting functionality of the Sky News app was created in-house. Andy Plesser
Commentary: Video Metadata and Video Search Mission Critical for Online Video Advertising, Analyst Swartz
To make sense of the massive amounts of online video flooding the broadband pipes, the Internet video business is in desperate need of better context, metadata and video SEO. That's the conclusion of Ashley Swartz, analyst for Beet.TV, in this weekly commentary on the state of the business. By all accounts, the business is on track for another stellar year with $3.1 billion in ad dollars expected to flow to Web video in 2012, coupled with continued investment from giants such as Google and YouTube, Swartz points out. The problem lies in sifting through billions of videos so they are findable and usable. After all, Cisco has said that by 2016 there will be 1.2 million minutes of video flowing through the Web every second. But if audiences can't find videos, then marketers can't either, Swartz warns in her commentary. Being able to track, tag and log video will go a long ways to serving advertiser interests, she predicts. Keep an eye on companies that can handle complex tagging, metadata and visual data, such as Watchwith and Veenome. Tune into Swartz' commentary for insight on how each company is driving key opportunities."If content is king, then context is his queen," Swartz said. "Advertisers and content providers will start looking at optimizing their video tagging." Ashley Swartz is a principal of the New York-based consultancy Furious Minds. She is former head of the interactive television practice at Digitas. She is a regular contributor to Beet.TV
